St Winifreds

St Winifreds Care Home in Kent is set to cut its reliance on grid electricity with a new rooftop solar PV and battery storage system. The proposed 53.68 kWp array is modelled to generate around 52,871 kWh of clean electricity every year, supplying roughly 22% of the care home’s annual electrical demand of 175,962 kWh. This on-site generation will help manage long-term energy costs while supporting a more sustainable operation for residents and staff.

Lifetime Savings: £296,243

System overview

The design for St Winifreds comprises 122 Jinko Tiger Neo 440 W N-Type All Black Mono solar panels installed across a mix of flat and pitched roof areas, as shown in the roof layout diagrams on pages 5–6. These high-efficiency modules feed into a SolarEdge Synergy 50 kW three-phase inverter alongside a Fox ESS AC3 10 kW three-phase AC-coupled inverter, converting the DC output from the array into usable AC electricity for the care home.

To maximise on-site use of solar energy, the system includes a SolarEdge 10.4 kWh battery storage system. This allows surplus generation from sunny periods to be stored and used later in the day or overnight, reducing grid imports when the sun is down. All required mounting, cabling, isolators, meters and monitoring equipment are included, with installation and certification carried out by an accredited team.

Performance Factors

The performance modelling for St Winifreds takes into account location, roof pitch and orientation, and shading, using detailed sunpath and roof diagrams. The array is split across several roofs with orientations around 48–51° and pitches of 0–30°, all with a shade factor of 1.00, indicating minimal expected shading losses. According to the System Performance page, the array is expected to generate 52,871 kWh per year.
